Fissure – A Theatrical Experience Set in the Yorkshire Dales

Fissure is a unique weekend-long, site-specific theatrical experience, created by acclaimed performance maker Louise Ann Wilson, who will be working with a rich and diverse team of artists and scientists in and around Ingleborough, at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Fissure is part of The Re-Enchantment, a national arts project exploring our relationships to place (see www.artevents.info for more information). Fissure will take place over three days from the 20th to the 22nd of May 2011, when the audience will embark on a walking exploration of the breath-tak

ing natural terrain of the Dales, tracking waterways, mountain peaks and valleys, and entering the ancient cave passages of the region. Fissure takes as its starting point the death of a much-loved young woman from a brain tumour. This deeply personal story will serve as the foundation of a new legend for the landscapes in which Fissure is situated, a tale that fuses neurological and geological mapping with archetypal, universally shared tellings of life, death, the underworld and rebirth.

Louise Ann [Wilson]’s haunting stillness was quite ominous and powerful. It was as if she was part of the surroundings, a presence that is always there and always watching – much like nature itself. – Spectator’s response to Far Arnside (an earlier piece by Louise Ann Wilson)

Fissure’s award-winning artistic team includes poet Elisabeth Burns (Michael Marks Award for Poetry Pamphlets and the Mirehouse Poetry Prize, both 2009), choreographer Nigel Stewart and composer Jocelyn Pook (winner of a British Composer Award and Olivier Award; Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee) who will be creating a new full-length choral piece for the performance.

Also involved are leading neuroscientists Dr. Michael Brada and Chris Clark, and a range of earth and environmental scientists. The people from the area – farmers, fell runners, cavers, choirs and potters – are sharing their stories, skills and resources as well as participating in Fissure.

Fissure is the fourth commission of The Re-Enchantment. It follows the successful publication of Artevents’ bookwork Towards Re-Enchantment: Place and Its Meanings (published November 2010).

Outdoors Show 2009-4

Birmingham will play host to the Outdoors Show yet again at the end of this month. The show, which runs from March 26 to 28, 2010, will be held at the NEC across 2 halls. It is the largest UK show dedicated to the outdoors and the 2010 event looks set to be another success.

There will be about 250 exhibitors including most of the large outdoor brands who will be displaying their latest outdoor collections and new technologies.

The main attraction, however, will no doubt be the “have a go” activities which provide visitors with the opportunity to try out new activities in the presence of an expert. These activities include wall climbing, a computrainer cycle simulator, coolboard, ice climbing, and slacklining, among others.

The Outdoors 2010 show will also feature a tent city, a fashion show, as well as a celebrity speaker session with a line-up which includes Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Kate Humble, James Cracknell, Ben Fogle, Simon King and Doug Scott.
